Green Drink

Green Drink - Image of a glassLast Friday night I was invited to a private opening of a juice bar/cafe that in town. The place is very cute! Great interior feel, good food menu and a juice menu. There were waitresses walking around taking your order for a juice and I believe you had a choice between a green juice or a berry one.
So I chose the green juice. Well, here is a confession, I have never had a “green” juice before that evening. It was the first time I tasted a “green” drink. With all the craze around juicing, you’d think I would have at least tried it. I try many foods, drinks, supplements that my clients use but for some reason I had never tried a green juice. Oh and yes, I’ve read Kris Carr’s Crazy, Sexy, Diet book.
Anyway, back to my first green juice experience, it was very good! It was not bitter which I expected and had a touch of citrus to it. Now, would I have ordered one if I walked into the cafe on my own? Nope! I wouldn’t have ordered any of the beverages off the menu. Primarily because there are only a few beverages that I enjoy other that water and most of the other ones have alcohol in them. Would I go back and order the green drink? Yes! The flavor was excellent. Would I seek it out? No, I love to eat my vegetables. I like the feel of them in my mouth, the satiety they provide, the benefits of the fiber in my system. You’re thinking, that’s so what a dietitian would say! I know, but so true. I would never buy all that produce and put it in a machine to get 8-12 oz of a green beverage. I’d steam, chop or saute the produce and feed my family.
Do I have clients that juice? YES! Do I discourage them from doing so? It depends. It really depends on WHY they’re juicing. It always goes back to the WHY. If you juice WHY do you? Do you not like to eat vegetables and fruits? Meal replacement? The feeling you get after you juice? A cleanse? All the above? Be honest with yourself and really ask yourself WHY you are doing it and please let it not be because Gwyneth Paltrow, Kris Carr or the girl in your Dailey Method class that is doing it and looks great. There are so many factors as to why they look great and the end all is not the Green Juice!
